The Jordan River—the place where Joshua once crossed, leading God’s people into the Promised Land and where Elijah passed on his prophetic mantle to Elisha—is the very place where John the Baptist began his ministry of repentance, calling people to “prepare the way of the Lord” (Isaiah 40:3). When Jesus presents himself for baptism, it causes John to pause. Jesus is the one John has been preparing for. Jesus does not need to be cleansed of sin but instead needs to sanctify the waters that will one day cleanse those who will believe in him. As he rises from the water, the Holy Spirit descends upon him like a dove, and a voice from heaven is heard to say, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).
